Implementation of the system on the line will be with no
service interruptions and is scheduled to begin in September
2010. Alstom has already renovated the train control systems of
other equally busy lines in Paris, Hong Kong and Beijing
without any interruptions in service.

The Urbalis solution will significantly increase train
frequency and transport capacity whilst, at the same time,
ensuring optimal safety, flexible operations and heightened
passenger comfort. The new system will permit Metro de Santiago
to reduce intervals between trains on line 1 allowing an
increase of passengers per hour by 20% on the line that at
present carries approximately 1 million passengers per day.

Urbalis is an advanced Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC
) system that integrates data transmission by radio. Recently
implemented on the Lausanne metro M2 line in Switzerland and on
the Circle Line in Singapore, this tried and tested technology
will soon be used on lines 1, 2 and 3 of Sao Paulo metro in
Brazil, on Milan line 1 and on Shangai line 10 which will thus
become Chinas largest fully automated metro line. It is
also being used on the Beijing Airport link, on line 2 of the
Beijing metro and on Singapores North-East line which is
the worlds highest capacity driverless metro line.
