The latest step was the electrification of the West section
(Algiers El-Affroun) of Algiers first suburban electric
line in early April. During this event, Algerian Transport
Minister Amar Tou, together with Abderrahmane Belkadi and
Mourad-Soliman Benameur, respectively General Directors of
ANESRIF (Algerian agency for rail investment studies) and SNTF,
made an inaugural round-trip voyage between the Agha station
and the new El-Affroun station. It followed the November 2008
electrification of the East section linking Algiers and
Thénia.

The agreement on this electrification project was signed
between Alstom and the Algerian rail transport companies in
August 2004. This project covered the installation of 350 km of
catenaries, three electrical substations, a SCADA* supervision
and control system and a new telecommunications network.
