SNCF signed a commercial agreement with Alstom on 29 July
2004 for a total contract of 160 locomotives worth €224
million, supplemented on 2 October 2008 by an additional
fifteen locomotives. Since the first one was delivered in March
2007, the locomotives already in service on the French network
have travelled over 1.8 million kilometres. Alstom and its
partner Vossloh Spain have designed a single-cab diesel
locomotive with an output power of 750 kW and capable of speeds
of 100 km/h. It can haul freight trains with loads of 1,000
tonnes. The diesel engine and electric traction drive are
designed to reduce energy consumption and sound emissions. The
driver’s cab is suspended, soundproofed and
air-conditioned for the comfort of the driver.
Alstom Transport’s French sites have helped design and
manufacture these single-cab locomotives: Tarbes has supplied
the traction drives, Ornans the engines, Villeurbanne the
on-board electronics and Saint-Ouen the speed control system.
The single-cab locomotives are assembled at the Valencia site
of Alstom’s partner, Vossloh Spain.
An established player in the locomotive and rail freight
market, Alstom has sold over 1,800 Prima locomotives since
launching the range with the first prototype in 1999. Syria,
Israel, Sri Lanka and Iran were Alstom’s first customers
for Prima electric diesels as early as 2000. Veolia Cargo
signed a contract for 31 electric locomotives with Alstom in
October 2005. In December 2008, Alstom delivered the last of
180 Prima electric diesels ordered by the Chinese Ministry of
Transport (MOR).
In addition to the hundred single-cab diesel locomotives, SNCF
is already running nearly three hundred Prima electric
locomotives (235 for freight and 65 for passenger transport in
Ile-de-France) and one hundred Prima diesel locomotives.
