The contract includes design, supply of the
equipment, installation of 70 kilometres of tracks and of a 750
VCC power supply third rail, testing and commissioning for the
Downtown Line. The contract is for the stages 1 and 2 of the
project (to be completed in 2013 and 2015), which will be built
in 3 stages. It also includes the extension of the existing North
South Line.

Alstom already equipped two other lines of the
Singapore metro, the North East Line (NEL) and the Circle Line.
The company supplied the metro carriages and successfully
installed its Urbalis technology in the NEL, the largest
automatic metro system in the world, in service since 2003.

Alstom is also in charge of the Circle Line
turnkey project since 2000. In addition to the rolling stock, the
contract includes engineering of the entire system, construction
of the tracks, provision of power supply systems and signalling
equipment and the train management and supervision system. When
it is put into full service in 2011, the Circle Line will be the
longest fully automated metro line worldwide stretching 33 km of
in-tunnel track.

In fulfilling this contract, Alstom will draw
on its expertise in the area of infrastructure (electrification
of railway lines, track laying, electromechanical systems for new
lines, modernization of existing lines). Alstom has already
electrified more than 10,000 kilometers and has laid more than
2,000 kilometers of track. Apart from Singapore's automatic
metro, the company has been awarded large-scale contracts for
China's high-speed Shi-Tai line, the High Speed 1
Paris-London link and Turkey's Marmaray project.
