The locomotives will be renovated at the Alstom site in
Stendal, Germany, which specialises in locomotive renovation.
The BR 203 locomotives will be renovated with environmental
concerns in mind in order to reduce noise, pollution and waste
thanks to the installation of a new low-polluting engine and a
particle filter. The locomotives will also have a high
recycling rate (over 90% of mass). New equipment will be
installed to improve efficiency: brake equipment, compressor
with air dryer, electronics and coupling gear. The locomotives
will be modernised in accordance with todays comfort
requirements: improved ergonomics for the driver, optimized
desks and noise insulation. Lastly, they will be compatible
with ETCS (European Train Control System), ATB (Dutch
signalling system) and Indusi (German signalling system).

RRF is a relatively new player in the private rail transport
market and already operates five Alstom BR-203 locomotives. The
company was acquired this year by the American operator Genesee
& Wyoming Inc (GWI) which operates, among others, in 16
ports in the US.

Alstom has already sold 70 BR-203 locomotives and 60 partly
renovated locomotives in Germany and the Netherlands during
recent years, as well as 20 BR 214 locomotives to various
private German operators. This locomotive is currently on
display at the InnoTrans Exhibition.

Alstom Transport locomotives

The locomotive market, valued at some 4.3 billion euros
annually, is one of the most segmented in the railway sector.
It includes locomotives with both electric and diesel electric
traction, used for hauling freight or transporting passengers,
as well as shunting locomotives. Alstom Transport, which holds
8% of the world market share, is a long-standing player in the
locomotive market. Its expertise and strength in the industrial
field means that it is in a position to offer both operators
and passengers a range of products and services perfectly
suited to their demands. Its most recent contracts include 31
electric locomotives for Veolia Cargo, a private operator. It
also started to deliver the first of 180 electric Prima units
ordered by the Chinese Ministry of Transportation (MOR). The
first customer for the new Prima generation was the Moroccan
National Railways (ONCF), who placed an order for 20 electric
units in November 2007. Over the last decade, Alstom has built
more than 1,400 locomotives in its plants at Belfort in France.
Alstom also offers a modernisation of diesel locomotives in its
site of Stendal (Germany).
