Sustainable transport a daily commitment for
Alstom Transport

Enabling a growing number of passengers to travel in ideal
conditions with minimum impact on the environment such
is the daily commitment of Alstom Transport, which places
innovation and sustainable development at the heart of its
range of products, services and equipment. This strategy
reflects Alstom Groups ambition to shape the future
while saving the planet. Each solution developed by Alstom
Transport incorporates environmental factors throughout its
life cycle, from manufacturer to recycling. Accordingly, 18% of
Alstom Transports R&D budget for 2008/09 will be
spent on protecting the environment.

Research work focuses mostly on decreasing energy consumption,
as with the AGV, which uses three times less fuel that a bus,
eight times less than a car and 15 times less than a plane.
Alstom also carries out research into trains capable of
operating in hybrid or bi-modes. Reducing the weight of trains
also helps to lower consumption. The mass of TGV, regional and
underground trains is now 10% to 15% less. The AGV weighs 70
tonnes, i.e. 17% less than its main competitors at equal
length.

Alstom also pays close attention to noise pollution. The AGV in
particular has benefited from this research: its sound levels
at 360km/h have been kept at the same level as that of its
closest rivals at 300 or 320km/h, largely due to the shape of
the nose. With Coradia, the self-ventilating engine
significantly reduces the generation of noise in stations.

The AGV on show at Innotrans

For the first time, Alstom Transport is unveiling the latest
generation of its very high-speed trains to the public. This
highly innovative single-floor train combines the design of
articulated carriages, which made the TGV² successful, and
new split engines. It will be capable of reaching commercial
speeds of 360km/h. The AGV has found its first customer in the
new Italian company, NTV.

After La Rochelle and Amsterdam, Alstom Transport goes to
Berlin to present the third part of its AGV design. A 3D
animation on the Alstom stand, Customise your
interiors, shows the different insides of the AGV.

This display is based on research by the Alstom Transport
Design & Styling department into five possible internal
layouts (among many others) that meet passenger expectations.
It means we can present and also publicly test different types
of interior layouts and ambiances.

Coradia at the heart of Alstoms environmental
commitment

Alstom is also presenting its regional Coradia train at
Innotrans a particularly significant example of Alstom
Transports commitment to sustainable transport. The
Coradia consumes little fuel and releases few greenhouses
gasses or particles. The Coradia Lint, in circulation in the
Frankfurt area of Germany, is the first diesel train in the
world to be fitted with a filter to reduce the emission of soot
particles by 95%.

Since its launch more than 20 years ago, Alstoms Coradia
has enjoyed undeniable success, particularly in Europe. Nearly
600 single-tier Coradia trains are currently operational in
seven countries (Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark, France,
Italy and Luxembourg).

The BR 214 locomotive an example of
modernisation to protect the environment

Environmentally-inspired modernisation is a service provided by
Alstom Transport. The primary aims are to improve the
efficiency of renovated stock, and reduce noise, pollution and
waste. The BR 214 locomotive on show at Innotrans this year has
benefited from such renovation, ensuring it meets all
environmental criteria: new low-pollution engine, high
recycling rate, particle filter.
