Alstom has won a contract worth about 160 million euros with the
national electricity utility PT.PLN (Persero) in consortium with
Marubeni Corporation for the construction of a combined cycle power
plant in Indonesia. The power plant is located at Muara Tawar, 35 km
from Jakarta, on the northern coast of Java.

The project consists of extending the existing power plant with a fifth unit. The Alstom-Marubeni consortium already built the combined cycle plant unit 1 and the gas turbine peaking plant unit 2 in 1995. New unit 5 will increase the total output of the plant by 235 MW from the current 1,800 MW, thus helping the country to meet the current high electricity demand on the Java/Bali grid. The plant will be operated with natural gas, thus helping the country to reduce its dependence on liquid fuel.

Under the terms of the contract, Alstom, as the consortium leader, will engineer, procure and commission a fully integrated power island, consisting of one GT13E2 gas turbine with one heat recovery steam generator, one COMAX steam turbine, two turbogenerators and the ALSPA control system. Alstom will engineer and manufacture the heat recovery steam generators at its local boiler facility in Surabaya, the capital of east Java. Marubeni Corporation will supply the balance of plant, high voltage switchyard, civil works and erection services.

To date, Alstom has sold more than 130 GT13E2 gas turbines on the international market and has been a key player in the Indonesian power generation market since the 1960s, accompanying PT. PLN to support the countrys growing energy demand via the construction of gas, coal and hydro plants. Alstom currently employs over 900 people in Surabaya, where it produces heat recovery steam generators, fluidized bed and supercritical boilers mainly for export.

Philippe Joubert, President of Alstom Power Systems, said: The signature of this contract proves that Alstom has been able to keep the customers confidence for over 40 years thanks to its excellent products and Plant IntegratorTM capabilities. This project will help the country to face its present power demand growth while protecting the environment with clean power generation.
