Two projects in Brazil: Alstom wins a major signalling contract in São Paulo and announces the creation of a new hydroelectric equipment factory

Patrick Kron, Chairman and CEO of Alstom, visited Brazil on 4 July and announced two new projects for Alstom Brazil in the transport and energy sectors: the construction of a hydromechanical equipment plant, located in Rondônia, and a contract for a fully automated control system for the São Paulo metro lines.

In the transport sector, Alstom has been selected by the government of the State of São Paulo, to supply a fully automated system for lines 1, 2 and 3 of the São Paulo metro. The project is worth around 280 million and concerns the complete renovation of the existing train control system. This contract is the largest metro signalling project ever won by Alstom.

Alstom will equip the lines with Urbalis, a complete train control and telecommunication system based on a CBTC (network integrating radio technology). This solution allows more efficient operation and makes it possible to increase train frequency and transport capacity. Delivery of the system is scheduled to start in 2010 and service will not be interrupted during the upgrade of the system.

Alstom was responsible for Singapores driverless metro system, the worlds largest automatic metro, as well as the driverless networks of Lausanne (M2), Beijing (line 2) and Shanghai (line 10). The Urbalis train signalling system has also been installed in other major cities such as Milan, Delhi, Santiago, Istanbul, Cairo, Seoul and Madrid.


In order to support hydroelectric projects in the northern region of Brazil and supply hydromechanical and lifting equipment for projects in the Amazon region, Alstom Hydro has joined forces with Bardella, a Brazilian capital goods company, to create a 50/50 joint venture called Indústria Metalúrgica e Mecânica da Amazônia (IMMA).

IMMA will invest around 35 million to build a plant located in Porto Velho, in the State of Rondônia, northwest of Brazil. This plant, operational at the end of 2009, will employ around 300 people.

IMMA will supply hydromechanical equipment for the Santo Antônio hydroelectric plant, one of the Madeira River projects (the Madeira river is one of the Amazons main tributaries). Alstom and Bardella are members of the EPC Consortium, led by Construtora Norberto Odebrecht, which was selected to build the Rio Madeira power plant.

The Santo Antônio plant will be built on the Madeira river in Rondônia, with an installed capacity of         3,150 MW. Alstom will supply the project with 19 bulb turbines, recommended for lower water head and reduced environmental impact.
