Alstom to build first GT26-based combined-cycle power plant in Tunisia

Alstom has been awarded a turnkey contract, worth approximately 335
million, by Société Tunisienne de lElectricité et du Gaz (STEG)* for
the construction of a 400 MW combined-cycle power plant.

The power plant will be constructed at Ghannouch, in the Gabes region, in southern Tunisia. An additional contract includes a 12-year operation support and maintenance agreement.

Under the terms of the contract, Alstom will supply a fully integrated turnkey power plant, composed of one KA26 combined-cycle unit, integrating in-house core plant components: one GT26 gas turbine, one heat recovery steam generator, one steam turbine, one TOPGAS turbogenerator and the ALSPA distributed control system.

Ghannouch will be the third power plant constructed by Alstom for STEG in Tunisia, after the combined-cycle power plants of Sousse and Rades, which went online in 1994 and 2001 respectively.

The demand for power in Tunisia is rising by 6% annually, as a result of Tunisias rapid economic development. The new facility will be constructed  on the site of the old thermal power plant of Ghannouch thus allowing the use of existing commodities such as the sea water intake and discharge structures. It is expected to meet a major part of the electricity demand in the southern part of the country and maintain the equilibrium of the electric power production between the regions.

* STEG (the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas) is the major generator and distributor of electricity in Tunisia, generating close to 80% of the countrys total electricity.
