Modern and efficient, the new generation of
metros, the MF2000, was put into service on Line 2 of the Paris
metro (France) on 12 June. In the framework of a contract signed
in July 2001 between the French operator, RATP, and a consortium
composed of Alstom, Bombardier and Areva TA, 45 new trainsets
will be put into service on Line 2 between now and January 2010
at a rate of 20 trains per year. This is part of a programme to
replace 40% of the RATP fleet dating back to the
1970s - on Lines 2, 5 and 9 of the Paris network.

Alstom Transport will lead this project from
its Centre of Excellence for metros in Valenciennes-Petite
Forêt (France) and supply and assemble the major components
at its sites in Ornans, Tarbes, Villeurbanne and Valenciennes
(France). Through performance improvements in the traction system
and energy-regenerative electric brakes, these modern trainsets
consume 30% less energy than a traditional metro. Its dynamic
performance reduces travel time and increases frequency, and the
on-board IT security system supplied by Areva AT meets the
highest standards in the field. The trainsets destined for Lines
5 and 9 of the Paris network will be put into service in 2010 and
2012 respectively.
