Alstom has added a class 1 clean-room to its service workshop facility
in Richmond, VA, in support of its growing generator services business.
The 1700 square-foot state-of-the-art clean-room to be used extensively for rewinding generator fields, has been designed with positive air pressure and HEPA filtration units, climate and humidity-control, and high-quality illumination.
The Class-1 environment allows a higher quality environment to protect generator rotors and other sensitive equipment when under-going major work. The facility has an innovative retractable split roof, which allows "easy-in-and-easy-out" utilizing the workshop's 350-ton lift capability for fossil and large four-pole nuclear rotors. The flexibility and extendibility of the new clean-room enables its use for a variety of applications and is spacious enough to accommodate two "normal sized" rotors at once.
The Richmond workshop facility has received a number of upgrades and improvements over the past several years including installation of numerous multi-axis milling centers for productions of blades and airfoils, improvements in its rotor welding facility, a state-of-the-art grit blast facility and upgrades to its high speed vacuum balance facility, which remains one of the largest in North America, capable of balancing nearly any size turbine or generator rotor.
Paul Elkovich, Vice President of Alstom Turbine Generator Services, described the new clean-room as an important addition to the Richmond service workshop and consistent with Alstom's strategy for continuous improvement, quality, and cycle time reduction.
