Alstom awarded long term maintenance contract for Al Hidd power plant in the Kingdom of Bahrain

Alstom has signed a long-term maintenance contract with
Hidd Power Company (HPC) for their 992 MW power and water
desalination plant situated in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Spanning over a period of fifteen years, the contract scope
includes the supply of spare parts, a resident engineer as well
as supervision services for the planned and unplanned
maintenance of the gas turbines and their direct
auxiliaries.

The EPC contract for a 720 MW KA13E2 combined-cycle power
plant was awarded to Alstom in 2001 and has been in commercial
operation since 2002. This was the second phase of the project
and followed the Al Hidd I 272 MW simple cycle desalination
plant.


Also provided as part of this maintenance contract is an
upgrade of the existing 5 gas turbines to the MXL technology.
This technology upgrade extends the inspection intervals for
the GT13E2 Gas Turbines, thereby providing the customer with
lower lifecycle costs and better availability.

The Al Hidd project addresses the rapidly growing power and
water demand in Bahrain. Initiated by the Ministry of
Electricity and Water (MEW), the project was later sold to an
international consortium of International Power (UK), Suez
Energy International (Belgium) and Sumitomo Corporation
(Japan). The consortium set up the Hidd Power Company to
acquire and operate the plant under a 20-year power and water
purchase agreement.

In the Middle East, expansion of the power sector is
advancing at an unprecedented rate. Electricity demand is at a
peak, spurred by a buoyant economy and rapid population growth.
Chronically low power reserve margins make securing reliable
energy production a key priority for the region. Alstom already
has an established presence in the Middle East and looks
forward to further consolidating it by supporting the fast
