Alstom is helping South Africa to provide every South African with affordable and reliable access to power by the year 2014. Over the short-term, it is enhancing the installed fleet of power plants, and bringing on-line new capacity as quickly as possible.

Under the Bravo contract, which was signed on February 29, 2008, Alstom will provide ESKOM (the South-African state-owned utility company) with key equipment for a 4,740 MW coal-fired power station located in Mpumalanga province, east of Johannesburg. Together with the Medupi contract which was signed two months earlier, both projects are worth more than 2.8 bn and constitutes the largest back-to-back contract deals ever signed in Alstoms history.

Alstom is also working on a significant Integrated Retrofit project at Arnot, which will add 300 MW to an existing 2,100 MW coal-fired power plant before 2009. We are actively participating in the return to service of two mothballed power stations, in Grootvlei and Komati, which will add 2, 161 MW to the grid by 2010.

Over the long-term, South Africa plans to diversify primary enery sources, reduce dependency on coal and expand the energy portfolio in order to adopt a varity of other environmentally-responsible energy solutions.

Alstom is well positioned to offer a broad product range and a variety of technological solutions to help stabilize the future of power generation in South Africa whether that power comes from coal, gas, nuclear, hydro or even wind power facilities.

As the global leader in integrated clean power solutions and with a solid, long-standing presence in South Africa, Alstom is supporting the expansion of installed capacity in the region, both now and in the future.
