Alstom has signed a contract worth approximately 20 million euros with EnBW Kraftwerke AG for the repowering of the Heilbronn Block 7, a coal-fired power plant in Germany. This award follows on from a previous contract worth 23 million euros for the HP-IP-LP retrofit of the steam turbine at the same site which was signed with Alstom Turbine Retrofit Mannheim group (TSR) in August 2007.

This new contract for Alstom Boiler Retrofit Stuttgart (EBR) is the result of an integrated boiler-turbine solution developed by TSR and EBR. The Boiler Retrofit group in Stuttgart worked closely together with TSR and EnBW Kraftwerke AG in order to develop and define the optimised overall solution for maximum performance and output. The repowering Project with EnBW Kraftwerke AG will increase the output of the existing Unit 7. In addition to this, the efficiency of the existing once-through, tower-type boiler power plant, Heilbronn Block 7 will increase due to the modifications made by TSR and EBR.

The boiler modifications essentially consist of replacing the existing 4 bowl mills with higher performance mills which are fitted with dynamic classifiers. These new mills not only improve the mills output but also allow an extended range of coals to be fired within the boiler. Further key modifications will be brought to parts of the pulverised coal ducts and an additional booster fan which collectively provides a sufficient amount of hot air for the upgraded coal mills will be implemented.

Furthermore, two new steam air heaters will be provided to further improve the boilers efficiency, and coupled with the modifications to the steam turbine equipment, will reduce CO2 emissions from the Heilbronn Block 7 power plant.

The project is scheduled for completion in November 2009.
