Sparkling design for the Reims tramwa

Transported in a special convoy from Alstoms
workshops in La Rochelle, the companys tramway
manufacturing centre, the model was installed on Place
dErlon and presented to local politicians on 19
September. Inhabitants of the city will be able to view it
until 29 September.

14 metres long and 2.4 metres wide, the model faithfully
translates the choice of the people of Reims, expressed in a
vote following the public consultation that took place last
January: an extremely pure design, full of elegance and
fluidity, in which the cintré
(waisted) lines evoke the fineness and lightness
of a champagne glass. The design of the Reims tramway, led by
the Alstom Transport design department in conjunction with the
agency MBD Design, stands out on account of a use of colour
pushed to the extreme, serving the artistic concept of the
designer chosen for the citys visual identity project,
Ruedi Bauer.

Within the framework of the concession of urban transport
services for the city of Reims, Alstom Transport represents the
consortium of companies in charge of creating, operating and
maintaining the tramway. In addition, Alstom Transport is
responsible for the design and construction of the entire
transport system. It will supply 18 Citadis tramway trainsets,
the signalling and 11.2 kilometres of rail track. 2 kilometres
of these will be equipped with the APS ground power supply
system, allowing the historic character of the city centre
and in particular the architectural perspective of the
cathedral - to be preserved thanks to the lack of overhead
lines. Lastly, Alstom will supply the electrical substations,
depot equipment, overhead lines and will be charged with
maintaining the infrastructure, trainsets and the
electromechanical equipment.

The Toulouse tramway, evoking the links that
unite the city and the world of aeronautics

Arrived in Toulouse on 18 September. the model was installed
on Place de la Capitole, where the citys inhabitants
will be able to view it for one week. It will then be put on
display at Blagnac.

The model sports the exterior design and interior arrangements
that resulted from a joint study between Tisséo SMTC, the
authority responsible for organizing transport in Greater
Toulouse, and the design departments of Airbus and Alstom
Transport. The tramway has been designed with a nose notable
for its aerodynamic lines, that evoke the links that unite the
city with the world of aeronautics. The model (1:1 scale)
measures almost 14 metres and weighs around 8 tonnes. It
includes the driving cab and two cars. It has been produced
principally in polyester, around a steel frame.

The contract signed with the SMTC involves a firm tranche
covering the design studies and the production of a 1:1-scale
model and, four conditional tranches involving the supply of 24
tramway trainsets and their maintenance, for a period of 5
years. The Citadis trainsets will operate on line E, the first
tramway line to form part of the project to extend the Toulouse
transport network. Its entry into commercial service is
scheduled for 2010, with the period for delivery of the
trainsets running from March 2009 to the first quarter of
2010.
