In 2003, the RATP had entrusted the Alstom-Inéo Infra
group (led by Alstom) with the development of a new centralized
system for controlling the supply of electrical energy to its
metro and RER suburban train networks. The RATP electrical
network supplies energy for the operation of all trains, the
lighting and low voltage for the stations and over 250
industrial and administrative buildings. The PCEM will be
capable of managing 1.4 billion kW/h per year, equivalent to
the annual consumption of electricity of a city with 350,000
inhabitants, such as Nice, for example.

Constructed around ICONISTM SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data
Acquisition) technology, the new station incorporates
Alstoms most recent IT innovations, applied to the
metros technical installations. Within the framework of
the contract, Alstom has supplied the RATP with a set of
multifunctional equipment and software: a tool for managing the
electrical network, a management support software for resolving
operating incidents on the network, software to support
maintenance and a simulator used to train operating personnel.

Boasting enhanced ergonomics, the new system provides more
information and in a more visual way, while facilitating the
analysis of data and incidents. It handles the electronic and
remote control of equipment (transformers, circuit breakers and
switches) and allows for reconfigurations, thus guaranteeing
maximum availability of energy in complete safety. In this way,
Alstom supports the RATP in its quest for performance in the
service of passengers, and in terms of safety and of the
availability of infrastructure and rolling stock.

The transition from the old system to the new took place
without disruption to the operation of networks, lines or
industrial sites. Entry into service was managed gradually
starting from 2005, following a phase of studies and software
development. This new system has been totally operational since
the month of January 2007 and has now passed into its warranty
period, demonstrating the perfect operation of the PCEM.
