The scope of work consists of upgrading six GT11N type gas turbines to GT11NM at the Bundang combined-cycle power plant, located on the outskirts of Seoul.

In late 2006, Alstom completed two GT11NM upgrades at Bundang that delivered approximately 18MW extra gas turbine output and large efficiency improvements. After this result, KOSEP decided to upgrade all six remaining units at the plant. The first two turbines of this new order will be upgraded in October and November this year, with the last unit due for completion in mid-2009.

The GT11N to 11NM upgrade configuration includes new turbine blades and vanes, heat shield segments, vane carrier, and exhaust gas housing. The upgrade results in significantly improved efficiency and power output without increased emissions. Additionally, optimised cooling and other design improvements improve turbine reliability, availability and maintainability relative to the GT11N engine, reducing the life-cycle costs of the turbines.

After the full implementation of all upgrades, the plant will provide additional power output comparable to having another gas turbine installed.

Hans-Peter Meer, Senior Vice President, Power Service, said: "This contract is an outstanding success for Alstom Power Service which shows once again that we have the products, technological expertise and project execution skills that keep our customers' plants competitive. Our GT11NM upgrade is an excellent, well-proven solution. We are very pleased that the first two Bundang upgrades were completed to the full satisfaction of KOSEP, and we're especially proud to have been entrusted to upgrade all remaining gas turbines at their plant."
