The exhibition of the work of Bernar Venet brings together an
artist, a town and a company. Bernar Venet’s art is one of
motion: his work and its installation invoke a route, a
rediscovery of the urban landscape. His art is also a dialogue
with the town, where the sculptures of the artist confront it,
invite themselves into its space and are open to all eyes.

Some of his work has been specially created for this exhibition
in Bordeaux and will be accompanied by pedagogical animations and
a conference prepared in collaboration with the CAPC, the museum
of modern art of Bordeaux.

At the heart of this trip through the town – the CitadisTM
tramway. Since 2003, it offers passengers in Bordeaux the
possibility of viewing the town in a different manner. Thanks to
the exclusive system of ground level power supply which the
tramway uses, the urban landscape has been freed and is ready to
be discovered, in the same way as the artistic creation.

The uniting of Alstom and the work of Bernar Venet in Bordeaux
can therefore be regarded as a natural phenomenon.

Bernar Venet, an artist of international renown,
imposed himself as one of the leaders of
“conceptual” art in the 1970s. In France, he
has participated in many exhibitions, both collective
– like the “Champs de la Sculpture” in
2000 on the Champs-Elysées and the Champ de Mars
– and personal – like the
“Arches” in 2003, at the invitation of the
former Minister of Culture, Jean-Jacques Aillagon, in the
Tuileries gardens in Paris. In 2004, the town of Nice
welcomed two installations, each composed of three
arches, on the Promenade des Anglais.
