Alstom receives Pro-Bahn Rail Passenger award 2007

The award was given in recognition of the construction of 42
electric multiple units of type ET474.3 delivered to S-Bahn
Hamburg (in a consortium with Bombardier Transportation).

These dual-current trains can be operated in both the DC
network of the suburban trains and the AC network of the
long-distance trains. The trains which are equipped with a
lateral shoe gear as well as with a roof pantograph obtain
their traction energy either from a lateral third rail or from
an overhead line.

It also rewards Alstom for the rebuilt eight diesel trains from
1993 into hybrid multiple units for AKN Eisenbahn GmbH. Since
2004 they have continuously been used in diesel operation on
both AKN and S-Bahn Hamburg networks using the lateral third
rail. Passengers from the northern outskirts of Hamburg benefit
from a direct connection to the city centre without having to
change trains.
