The workshop was designed to allow the journalists to get to
know Alstom Transport, showcase the company’s technology
in the area of urban transport and support its commercial
activities.

The first morning was devoted to a comprehensive presentation
of the global metro market, its challenges, developments and
the trends to be expected in the years to come. Alstom
Transport currently equips over 45 cities throughout the world
and holds a 20% market share. Its metro business is growing
thanks to the success of the Metropolis range and is expected
to account for 10% of company sales. Philippe Mellier, CEO of
Alstom Transport, Marc Chatelard, SVP for the Asia Pacific
region and Alstom Transport experts led the discussions and
answered the journalists’ questions. Elsewhere, Sim Wee
Meng of Land Transport Authority, the body which plans the
city’s public transport equipment projects, explained to
participants the reasons for the choice of the completely
automatic version of Alstom Transport’s Metropolis for
the city of Singapore.

During the afternoon, a journey in a “driverless”
metro, followed by a visit to the North-East line depot,
allowed journalists to gain a global vision of the Singapore
project.

The morning of February 9 was devoted to a visit to the largest
underground depot in the world, which is currently under
construction. It belongs to the Circle Line, the future
circular line of the Singapore metro, which will extend over
32km and take in 29 stations. This line, entry into commercial
service of which is scheduled for 2010, will be served by 40
fully automated Metropolis tramsets.

These days of total immersion in the world of the metro ended
with a guided visit of the city of Singapore, with all its rich
contrasts.
