Alstom has been awarded new contracts to supply air pollution control
equipment to aluminium smelters in the Middle East. The company has won
orders for fume treatment plants at the DUBAL Aluminium plant in Dubai
and the Hormozal Aluminium Smelter in Iran.

In addition, Alstom has commissioned one of the worlds largest gas treatment plants at the Khakas Aluminum Smelter in southern Siberia.

Alstom will supply a new turnkey gas treatment plant to the Dubai Aluminium Company Ltd (DUBAL), for the potline 6B extension and will also connect gas ducts from the potline 5B extension to an existing Alstom gas treatment plant that has spare capacity. The contract is managed by DUBALs consultant SNC-Lavalin, Europe BV.

The new potline 5B extension will use DUBAL's traditional D20 pot technology, while the new potline 6B extension will be built using 40 pots of Dubal new advanced pot technology.

The DUBAL smelter is located in Jebel Ali, 30 km south west of Dubai city and is one of the largest producers of aluminium in the world. DUBAL currently produces 861,000 metric tons of aluminium per year, and this latest expansion plan of potline 5B and 6B will increase its production capacity to 920,000 tons per year by completion in Q4 2007.

Alstom has also been awarded a contract by FATA S.p.A. in Italy to supply gas treatment plants for potline 2 at the Hormozal (formerly Almahdi) Aluminium Smelter in Southern Iran.

The agreement covers the supply of two gas treatment systems to treat gases from the electrolytic cells and one gas treatment system for the gases from the anode bake furnace. Hormozal Aluminium Smelter is owned by IMIDRO, the Iranian Mines and Mineral Industries Development and Renovation Organisation.

Also, Alstom has commissioned a gas and fume treatment plant at the Russian Aluminium Groups (RUSAL) 300,000 T/yr Khakas Aluminium Smelter, located next to its existing Sayansk Aluminium Smelter in Siberia. The gas treatment plant is one of the largest in the world and the largest that Alstom has ever delivered, treating 2.8 million m3/h of pot gas. The fume treatment plant will clean gases from the anode production unit.

The systems have been erected by RUSAL under the supervision of Alstom. This is a new milestone in the close co-operation between Alstom and RUSAL in Siberia. RUSAL is the third largest aluminium producer in the world.

The gas and fume treatment plants are all based on Alstoms ABART technology, a system designed and patented by Alstom specifically for the aluminium industry, for the removal and recovery of fluorides and particulates. Fluoride emissions will be reduced by 99.8%.

Since the launch of this technology in the early 90s, Alstom has supplied ABART systems for around 30% of aluminium production worldwide.
