Sustainable management and saving of resources have long
been priorities of the Salzgitter site, which was validated
EMAS* in 1996. The site combines environmental, health and
safety protection with quality assurance in an integrated
management system and is therefore a precursor in the European
rail industry.

Besides internal environmental protection, Alstom advances
numerous sustainable product developments such as the
world’s first Diesel multiple unit with particle filter,
launched in September 2006. Ten of these low-emission trains
have so far been successfully used in passenger service for the
Taunusbahn in the Frankfurt region. As for soot particles,
already today they meet the future exhaust gas directive that
will come into force in 2012.

Salzgitter has also been the first railway manufacturer using
renewable raw materials like hemp and jute for the interior
paneling of trains. Engineers are presently investigating where
other plastic components may be replaced by components of
renewable raw materials.

*EMAS: Eco Management and Audit Scheme: joint system for
voluntary environmental management and environmental auditing
is developed by the European Communities for companies wishing
to improve their environmental performance. Production is to
improve beyond the legal environmental requirements.
