In 2002, ALSTOM was awarded a contract to manufacture 184 of
the new series cars as part of a programme designed to improve
WMATA’s system reliability, and ease crowding on platforms
and trains during peak periods. However, delivery of cars was suspended this past spring
when a problem was discovered with some of the cars’
kingpins, requiring most of the vehicles to be retrofitted with a
newly designed part and tested. As a result, overall production
of the cars at ALSTOM ‘s Hornell, NY facility was slowed by
several weeks. The first two repaired and fully certified cars entered into
revenue service on WMATA’s system during rush hour on the
20th September. An additional fourteen cars at WMATA are
currently being commissioned and regular shipments from Hornell
have resumed. For more information, please
