Alstom has been awarded a contract for the engineering, design and construction of the boiler and air quality control equipment for a new 850 MW advanced high-efficiency coal-fired power plant for US utility Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L).

This contract is worth 700 million dollars (560 million euros).

When completed in 2010, this unit will generate extremely clean and reliable electricity from the US abundant coal resources. This award underscores Alstoms continued global leadership in advanced clean coal combustion technologies.

The new unit, known as Iatan 2, will be located at the Iatan Generating Station near Weston, Missouri, US. The award also includes integrated environmental control systems for the new unit and major retrofit work to the environmental control systems of Iatan 1, the existing 670 MW coal-fired unit at the plant. Burns & McDonnell, headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri (USA), has been named the Owners Engineer.

Selection of Alstom for the boiler and air quality control system components of Iatan 2 is a crucial step toward completion of this important regional asset, said Bill Downey, President and CEO of KCP&L. The addition of Iatan 2, along with the planned environmental upgrades to Iatan Unit 1 will meet growing regional energy needs, while substantially improving air emissions at that site.

Philippe Joubert, President of Alstoms Power Turbo-Systems/Power Environment Sector, commented: "Alstom will provide a solution for Iatan 2 that integrates the latest boiler technology with post-combustion air emissions control equipment. For Iatan 1, we will integrate several components to bring the plant up to a very high environmental standard. Our expertise in both the individual components and in integrated engineering was an important factor in Alstom winning this contract."
