During the event, the European Transport Commissioner, Jacques
Barrot, described how the Thalys was a forerunner in rail
interoperability and how the “single European rail
market”, through developments in signalling systems, will
make cross-border journeys more safe, efficient and
cost-effective.

The Thalys fleet currently comprises 17 trains equipped with 4
voltage systems and 7 signalling systems to operate at the entire
Thalys network, plus 10 Thalys “PBA”
(Paris-Brussels-Amsterdam) trains equipped with 3 voltage
systems.

ALSTOM’s Thalys trains covered 10.5 million kilometres
in 2005. Each train is equipped with 8 synchronic engines with
8,800 kW power, weighs 385 tonnes, is 200 metres long and has
seating for 377 passengers.

With the production of Thalys, ALSTOM underlined its
leadership position as a designer and manufacturer of the
high-speed trains and interoperability systems.

During the event in rainy Brussels the four station managers
of Amsterdam, Brussels, Cologne and Paris revealed a placard
symbolizing the cooperation of the four cities. In each station a
placard will be mounted.
