ALSTOM will supply a seawater flue gas desulphurization
(SWFGD) air pollution control system that will reduce sulphur
dioxide emissions in line with the most stringent EU emission
requirements, as specified in the Large Combustion Plant
Directive (LCPD).

ALSTOM and AMEC will be jointly responsible for the project
management. ALSTOM will supply all the air pollution control
systems and components, while AMEC will be responsible for the
site management, civil and structural design and
construction.

The ALSTOM SWFGD system uses the power plants
seawater cooling water for treating the sulphur dioxide from
the flue gas. The process does not require the addition of any
chemicals, only seawater and air are used, and the discharged
seawater fully complies with environmental regulations.

AES Kilroot Power Station produces one third of the
electricity need for Northern Ireland. AES is one of the
worlds leading power companies with businesses in 26
countries, employing some 30,000 people.

This is the second major contract ALSTOM has recently won
for a SWFGD system in the UK, following the award of Aberthaw
Power Station from RWE power in 2005. ALSTOM is the worldwide
SWFGD technology leader and has supplied SWFGD systems to
Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and China.
