ALSTOM Transport rewards sites for safety and security
performance

As such, safety in the workplace remains the main focus of
the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS)
programme. This determination will be reinforced during a
series of events from 16 to 24 January for the companys
26 000 staff. ALSTOM Transports sites in Ornans
(France), Sesto San Giovanni (Italy), Rochester (USA) and
Monterrey (Mexico), which demonstrated the best security
performances, will be rewarded during a trophy ceremony at
ALSTOM Transports headquarters in Saint Ouen, France on
the final day of the event.

Around forty sites in 20 countries will participate in EHS
week. The themes and types of events chosen by the individual
sites will reflect both their activity and their environment.
These initiatives include :

- conferences about cardiovascular, electrical or chemical
dangers, gathering operational managers, works doctors as well
as technical experts in the given fields,

- training programmes about lifesaving actions in case of fire,

- accident prevention systems,

- information stands and exhibitions detailing ergonomics,
posture, tobacco and alcohol risks,

- security quizzes.

At the end of 2004, the decision was taken to adopt a
resolutely managerial approach to this issue. As such, a major
training programme was implemented, involving1600 managers in
all functional communities around the world. The conditions
were created so as to heighten awareness of the issue and to
federate management so that EHS objectives were integrated into
the product life cycle at all levels.

An EHS guidebook was developed. Constructed as a 5-step
programme, the guidebook comprises 46 programmes.

These processes made change easier : every manager is now
responsible for the definition of EHS standards, for
controlling performances and for evaluating the risks linked to
his / her activities. Planned General Inspections (PGI) at
workstation level, EHS performance reviews at site, sector and
product line level, as well as internal EHS audits complete the
programme. Additionally, regular internal information bulletins
and other events have accelerated awareness.

In certain sites, changes have already been implemented :
workstation reorganisations, flow modifications or storage
changes, as well as increased ergonomic awareness, and as such,
results are continuously improving. From now on, at the
entrance to each site, a panel will detail the accident
rate.
