ALSTOMs project to modernize the high pressure and intermediate
turbines at PVO-Lämpövoima Oys Tahkoluoto coal-fired power plant is proceeding
according to the time schedule. The turbines arrived to Pori
in Finland
on Thursday  September, 8th. The weight
of the fully assembled turbines is almost 170 000 kilos. The dismantling
of the old turbines started in the beginning of September.

PVO-Lämpövoima Oy, the daughter company of
Pohjolan Voima, and Alstom Finland Oy signed the contract for the delivery of
high-pressure and medium-pressure turbines to PVO-Lämpövoimas Tahkoluoto
coal-fired power plant in Pori in Western Finland in September 2004. The new turbines will
replace the existing turbines of Russian manufacture. During the project these
turbines will be fully retrofitted including also the sealing steam system. The
low pressure turbine will remain as it is now.

The new turbines have been manufactured in
ALSTOMs Polish turbine factory in Elblag.
The turbines, with a total weight of 170 000 kilos, have been transported
to Finland by a charter
vessel from the harbour city of Gdansk.
The vessel with the two turbines arrived to Mäntyluoto harbour in the city of Pori on Thursday
afternoon September, 8th. The road transport from the harbour to
Tahkoluoto power plant was done during Thursday evening and night by a special
truck.

The erection and maintenance work at the
power plant will last 8 weeks. Approximately 50 specialists are working on the
project in two shifts round-the-clock. At the same time with the replacement of
the turbines a complete maintenance is done for the generator. With the new
equipment, the capacity of the power plant is increased by approx. 10 MW and
the availability of the plant is improved, which means that the amount of the
carbon dioxide and particle emissions from the power plant will not rise. The
power plant particle emissions are cleaned with electrostatic precipitators,
also delivered by ALSTOM in the 90s.

PVO-Lämpövoima Oys Tahkoluoto coal-fired
power plant was put into operation in 1976. The present capacity of the power
plant is 245 MW.
