ALSTOM has been awarded a contract by Public Service Co. of Colorado, doing business as Xcel Energy, to design, supply, erect and commission a high-efficiency, supercritical boiler for the companys planned 750 MW Comanche 3 generating unit.

The unit will be an expansion of Xcel Energys existing Comanche power station in Pueblo, Colorado, United States. The unit is scheduled to go into commercial operation in 2009 and will provide Xcel Energy customers with clean, reliable, and economic electricity from the United States abundant domestic coal resources.

ALSTOMs boiler will be the core of one of the most advanced state-of-the-art steam plants to be built in the US to date. The boiler is designed to burn low-sulphur Powder River Basin coal and is equipped with ALSTOMs unique TFS 2000 Ò firing system.

This system, coupled with a selective catalytic reduction system, will result in one of the lowest nitrogen oxide emissions in the nation. In addition, the high pressure, high temperature advanced steam cycle significantly increases plant efficiency, thus minimising emissions and fuel costs.

This award represents a continuation of ALSTOMs global leadership in advanced cycle units; similar ALSTOM boilers operating in Europe and Asia have demonstrated the reliability and performance of supercritical technology.

" Xcel Energy is pleased to be able to complete this agreement as one of the critical steps in our efforts to add a new generating unit at the Comanche station in a way that is good for the environment. Our contract with ALSTOM will result in overall reductions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide emissions from the entire facility when unit 3 is completed and operating," said David Wilks, Xcel Energy president for Energy Supply.
