ALSTOM, in consortium with INITEC Energía of Spain, has been awarded a contract by Endesa Generación SA to supply a Wet Flue Gas Desulphurisation (WFGD) system to Los Barrios Power Plant located near Cádiz. The system will reduce sulphur dioxide emissions from the plant by 90%. ALSTOMs share of the contract is 28 million euros.

ALSTOMs scope of supply includes engineering, supply of process equipment, supply and erection of I&C and commissioning services.

The project is scheduled for completion in March 2008.

ALSTOMs WFGD technology removes the sulphur dioxide produced during the combustion of coal in power plants. The system uses ground limestone reagent to react with the sulphur dioxide in the flue gas to produce a gypsum byproduct, that can then be commercialised or safely landfilled.

ALSTOM has accumulated some 38,000 MW of operating experience in WFGD systems over the past 40 years.
