ALSTOM has been awarded a 30 million euro contract to upgrade four generators at a hydroelectric power plant in British Columbia, Canada, for one of the countrys major utilities, British Columbia Hydro and Authority (BC Hydro).

The MICA Hydroelectric Generating Station, located on the Columbia River near Revelstoke in British Columbia, was commissioned in the 70s and produces 17% of British Columbias total electricity.

ALSTOM will increase the output of each of the four generators by 15% from 457MVA to 526MVA, taking the overall output of the MICA underground powerhouse to 2100MVA, and improve the reliability of the machines.

The upgrading work will include supplying new stators, coolers and poles, with ALSTOMs Hydro unit in Tracy, Canada, being in charge of manufacturing, installation and commissioning of the project. The first unit is scheduled for delivery on June 2006 and the last for June 2009.

Frederic Schneider-Maunoury, managing director of ALSTOMs Hydro business, said: Rehabilitation and upgrade of existing plants is more and more favored by hydro operators as they can increase output considerably without a negative impact on the environment, and only at a fraction of the cost of building new plant. This is a market where ALSTOM has accumulated a great deal of expertise on projects world-wide over many decades, and this contract reaffirms our commitment to this market.
