ALSTOM has been awarded contracts valued at some 30 million euros by the
Russian Aluminium Group (Rusal) to supply gas treatment plants for two
aluminium smelters in southern Siberia.

The agreement covers the supply of 15 dry scrubbing gas treatment systems over a period of three years to the Sayanogorsk and Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Plants. The Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Plant is the second largest smelter in the world, producing 865,000 tonnes of aluminium per year.

The gas treatment plants will be based on ALSTOMs ABART technology, a system designed and patented by ALSTOM specifically for the aluminium industry, for the removal and recovery of fluorides and particulates. Fluoride emissions will be reduced by 99%. The systems will be erected by Rusal under the supervision of ALSTOM.

Installation of the gas scrubbers is part of the expansion and major pot room modernization projects at the smelters, which will result in increased output at the plants, coupled with a significant reduction in gaseous emissions produced from the production process.

Since the launch of this technology in the early 90s, ALSTOM has supplied ABART systems for around 30% of aluminium production worldwide.

Rusal is the third largest aluminium producer in the world.
