ALSTOM has been awarded two contracts for the supply of fume treatment centers to the Nordural Aluminium Smelter in Iceland. The contracts have a combined value of 28 million euros.

ABART is a system designed and patented by ALSTOM specifically for the aluminum industry for the removal and recovery of flurides and particulates. Of the total production of aluminum worldwide, almost 30 percent have ALSTOM fume control systems installed.

The aluminium smelter is being expanded and the two orders cover the supply of fume treatment centers, based on ALSTOM ABART 600 technology, to the third and fourth expansion phases of the smelter.

For the third expansion phase, ALSTOM will supply 16 ABART 600 single-line design filter compartments. A dual duct ventilation system will also be supplied to reduce fugitive emissions from the pots. Metal production (90,000 tonnes per annum) at this extension is scheduled to begin in February 2006.

For the fourth expansion phase (40,000 tpa), ALSTOM will supply a fume control system based on ABART technology. Metal production is scheduled to commence in May 2006.

These orders follow on from ALSTOM's successful contribution to the completion of the smelter in 1997, in a record 14 months, and a further order of a fume treatment center for the second expansion phase of Nordural in 2000.

Nordural is a subsidiary of Century Aluminum Company, which has headquarters in Monterey, California in the United States. Century Aluminum owns 625,000 tpa of primary aluminum capacity.
