ALSTOM has been awarded a second order to supply a Sea Water Flue Gas
Desulfurization (SWFGD) system to Units 3 & 4 of Qingdao Power
Plant, located in Shandong Province in eastern China.

The contract is valued at around 4 million euros and ALSTOM will supply the conceptual engineering, key components and services.

This order follows the supply of a SWFGD to Units 1 & 2 of the coal-fired plant, a project that is currently under execution. Since the repeat order was of the same design and equipment, ALSTOM was able to offer a competitive price due to reduced manhours. The customer also benefitted from ALSTOMs ability to combine its global experience and expertise in air pollution control with its knowledge of local customer requirements and conditions for effective project execution.

SWFGD is a process by which seawater, which is alkaline by nature, is used to neutralise sulfur dioxide (SO2). When SO2 is absorbed in seawater, the end product is dissolved sulfate, which is already one of the major constituents of seawater. The process does not require the addition of any chemicals, only seawater and air are used. Another advantage is that no solids are formed in the process, and hence there are no land disposal issues, nor scaling in the process equipment.

ALSTOM is a world-leading supplier of air pollution control solutions, and has accumulated over 30 years of experience in SWFGD, which offers high removal efficiency, low lifecycle cost and reliability.
