Train separation will be performed by a modern automatic block
system (Blocco Automatico Banalizzato, cc 3/3) that, thanks to
nine-code track circuits, is able to transfer a very large amount
of data to the equipment on board the trains.

The system is designed to handle regular traffic of up to
500 trains a day.  It will complement and be integrated with
the automatic train-control system (Sistema di Controllo della
Marcia dei Treni), also supplied by ALSTOM, that has been in use
on the existing line since December 2003.

The new system is scheduled to begin operating in early
2007.

'We're pleased that RFI has once again chosen ALSTOM
technology for its infrastructure-modernization program,' said
Emilio Gallocchio, managing director of ALSTOM Transport in Italy
and country president for ALSTOM in Italy. 'The technology that
will be implemented on the Padua-Mestre line will help reduce
maintenance costs and, most of all, improve service.'

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in more than
60 countries, ALSTOMs Transport sector offers complete
products and services for new rolling stock, signaling, and
electrical and mechanical infrastructure as well as maintenance
and rehabilitation services to four distinct types of customers:
urban transit authorities and operators; intercity passenger rail
operators and rolling stock owners; rail freight operators; and
intercity railway infrastructure owners. ALSTOMs Transport
sector, with sales of 5.1 billion in financial year
2002-2003, is among the worlds leading suppliers to the
railway industry.
