GIF, the Spanish railway infrastructure authority, has chosen
ALSTOM within a consortium of Spanish companies to design, build
and maintain power substations and other infrastructure for the
Lérida-Barcelona section of a high-speed rail line between
Madrid and Barcelona.

The value of the contract, signed June 27, is €45.5
million. The share for ALSTOM, which has a 26.5 percent stake in
the consortium, is €12 million.

The contract calls for the design, supply, installation and
maintenance of three substations (400 kV / 2x25 kV) and 13
autotransformer stations.

The Madrid-Barcelona high-speed line is a priority project for
both the Spanish railway and European Union authorities.

ALSTOM is in charge of the technical management of the
project. The three other members of the consortium are the
Spanish contracting companies Electren, Isolux and Cymi.

“ALSTOM is proud to be a part of the development of
high-speed rail in Spain,” said Philippe Mellier, president
of ALSTOM Transport, who met with GIF officials at the 55th UITP
World Congress in Madrid on May 7. “We are happy that GIF
has reconfirmed their confidence in our project-management
capability and our technology with this project, which also
demonstrates our commitment to the Spanish market and to
high-speed rail.”

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in more than
60 countries, ALSTOM's Transport sector offers cutting-edge
products and services for new rolling stock, signaling and
electrical and mecanical infrastructure as well as maintenance
and rehabilitation services to four distinct types of

ALSTOM's Transport sector, with sales of €5.1 billion in
financial year 2002-2003, is among the world's leading
