Gas Turbine for Boeing Wind Tunnel

ALSTOM has won a 3.2 million euro order from The Boeing Company in the USA to supply a gas turbine-driven compressor set for a Polysonic Wind Tunnel (PWT) project. The order represents the first application by Boeing of a gas turbine in a PWT facility and the first ALSTOM gas turbine sold to Boeing. 

Under the terms of the contract ALSTOM will supply a 10,300hp (ISO) rated Tornado gas turbine driving a Cooper Model TA/MSG Compressor for the PWT Project at Boeing Integrated Defense Systems in St Louis, Missouri. 

The compressor package will provide an expansion of the air support system for the PWT, used to test the aerodynamic characteristics of scale models of aircraft and missile products. 

Incorporating the compressor package will provide benefits to the customer by reducing charging time of the storage tanks, and thus increasing the frequency of testing in the PWT, making its operation more efficient and cost effective. 

The Tornado gas turbine will be supplied by Demag Delaval Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd in Lincoln, UK. The company was formerly ALSTOM and is now part of Siemens Power Generation. The order was won by ALSTOM’s Industrial Turbine facility in Houston, Texas who will assemble and test the compressor package for delivery by December 2003.
