ALSTOM has signed a contract valued at more than 29 million euros with SNC-Lavalin, for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of a turbine-generator set, plant controls and their auxiliaries at the Brilliant Expansion Hydroelectric Power Plant in Canada. This contract is part of a larger project to expand the existing Brilliant Dam Generating Station owned by the Brilliant Expansion Power Corporation.  The dam is located on the Kootenay River near Castlegar, British Columbia.

Design and engineering work for the new 120 MW hydro turbine-generator set is already underway at ALSTOM’s Sorel-Tracy plant.  Manufacturing will start in the spring of 2004 and commissioning is scheduled for August 2006.

The expansion project will provide major environmental benefits. According to the information provided by the Columbia Power Corporation of the Province of British Columbia,  “when completed, the Brilliant Expansion will use seasonal flows, currently released through the spillways at the Brilliant Dam, to provide clean, renewable energy. Environmentally, the project will reduce excess dissolved gas levels harmful to fish and will offset an estimated 450,000 tonnes/year of climate changing CO2 emissions that (absent the project) would arise from fossil fuel generation.”
