The mayor of Hamburg, Ole von Beust, inaugurated the 100th DT4
metro train for the city, driving it himself along the historical
circuit from Schlump station to the town hall. The inaugural
drive celebrated the handing over to Hamburger Hochbahn of the
city's latest and most modern metro train.

The train delivered June 18 belongs to the fifth series of DT4
trains. Since the first contract was signed in 1986, Hochbahn has
ordered a total of 126 four-unit DT4 metro trains from a
consortium comprised of ALSTOM and Bombardier.

"With the DT4, a safe, modern, low-noise and environmentally
sound underground train for Hochbahn, ALSTOM and Bombardier have
high set standards in vehicle design," said Ulrich Sieg, chairman
of the Rail Transport division at Hochbahn. "The excellent
collaboration between ALSTOM, Bombardier and Hochbahn has
guaranteed high technical standards for many years, and putting
the vehicles into operation has been smooth."

Hochbahn has recently ordered a further 15 trainsets of the
sixth generation of DT4s. The trains will be handed over to
Hochbahn in monthly intervals, with the last delivery scheduled
for April 2005.

Consortium leader ALSTOM is responsible for the structure,
mechanical parts, bogies and brake systems, and the work will be
carried out by its Salzgitter plant. Bombardier is supplying the
electrical equipment from its Mannheim facility.

The new DT4 trains are highly comfortable and very safe. They
are the only trains in Germany equipped with a water-sprinkling
system. The trains boast a high level of technology and unmatched
environmental standards.

"Hochbahn is a highly innovative company and has always
enthusiastically embraced new concepts presented by us," said
Dieter Klumpp, managing director of ALSTOM's Salzgitter plant.
"With the environmental optimization of the new DT4 generation,
we have been able to accumulate extensive environmental
expertise. These findings can today be applied to all new rolling
stock which gives us all a real competitive edge."

Examples of the economic and environmental advantages of the
DT4 trains:

The new trainsets are up to some 95 percent
recyclable thanks to their practical disassembly concept.

Environmentally friendly materials largely replace
composite materials and chemicals.

Five of the new trainsets are equipped with seat
backs consisting of renewable raw materials, e.g. hemp and flax,
which replace fiber-reinforced plastics.

The DT4s are very quiet vehicles, equipped with
silent, water-cooled, three-phase traction motors. The traction
converters and auxiliary converters are also water-cooled.

Energy consumption by the traction system as well
as by the utilities providing passenger comfort is comparatively
low: At 0.09 kWh per person and kilometer, consumption clearly
remains lower than the worldwide average for underground vehicles
(0.11 kWh/person/km).

Braking energy can be regenerated.

Heat emitted from the traction motors and
converters is used for heating the vehicles in winter.

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in more than
60 countries, ALSTOM's Transport sector offers cutting-edge
products and services for new rolling stock, signaling and
electrical and mecanical infrastructure as well as maintenance
and rehabilitation services to four distinct types of
customers: urban transit authorities and operators; intercity
passenger rail operators and rolling stock owners; rail freight
operators; and intercity railway infrastructure owners.
ALSTOM's Transport sector, with sales of 5.1 billion in
financial year 2002-2003, is among the world's leading
suppliers to the railway industry.
