A consortium composed of ALSTOM and Bombardier Transportation
has received an order from Deutsche Bahn for the supply of an
additional 60 four-car Class 423 trains.

In total, Deutsche Bahn has ordered 456 of these trains, more
than 300 of which have already been delivered.

This follow-on order is valued at approximately €210
million. ALSTOM’s share is approximately €71
million.

Delivery of the trains, which Deutsche Bahn intends to use in
S-Bahn operation, is scheduled to start in May 2004.

Both ALSTOM and Bombardier will build the trains in Germany.
ALSTOM's plant in Salzgitter, and Bombardier
Transportation’s sites in Hennigsdorf and Siegen, will be
responsible for the propulsion equipment and bogies, interior
fitting, final assembly, testing and commissioning. The car
bodies will be built by ALSTOM and the electrical equipment will
be supplied by Bombardier’s plant in Mannheim.

The Class 423 vehicles, which are part of the new generation
of electric multiple units, have a modular design. They will
gradually replace Deutsche Bahn's Class 420 vehicles, which have
been in service for some 30 years.

The trains boast a sleek design and modern technology and meet
the latest environmental standards.

Dieter Klumpp, managing director of ALSTOM's Salzgitter site,
said: 'In developing these multiple units, we put high priority
on passenger safety and comfort, and preventive fire protection.
We also made the trains highly resistant to vandalism.'

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in more than
60 countries, ALSTOM's Transport sector offers cutting-edge
products and services for new rolling stock, signaling and
electrical and mecanical infrastructure as well as maintenance
and rehabilitation services to four distinct types of
customers: urban transit authorities and operators; intercity
passenger rail operators and rolling stock owners; rail freight
operators; and intercity railway infrastructure owners.
ALSTOM's Transport sector, with sales of €5.1 billion in
financial year 2002-2003, is among the world's leading
suppliers to the railway industry.
