ALSTOM has won a €46 million contract to build nine light rail trains from FGV, the transportation authority of the Spanish region of Valencia. The contract for the order was signed on April 26.

The light trains will operate in both tram mode, with a top speed of 70 kph, and train mode, with a top speed of 100 kph.

The bidirectional trainsets will be 37 meters long, with passenger capacity of 99 seated and 204 standing.

The vehicles are for the Tren-Tram service from Alicante to Altea, about 50 kilometers away. Trip time between Alicante and Altea will be less than an hour.

A new, intermodal station in Alicante will offer connections with bus lines and RENFE national rail lines.

ALSTOM’s Valencia facilities will supply all mechanical parts, including the bogies, and assemble the vehicles. ALSTOM's unit in Charleroi, Belgium, will supply the traction equipment.

Delivery is scheduled to begin in May 2005 and be complete in October 2005.

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in over 60 countries, ALSTOM's Transport Sector offers cutting-edge products and services to four distinct types of customers: urban transit authorities and operators; intercity passenger rail operators and rolling stock owners; rail freight operators; and intercity railway infrastructure owners.
