ALSTOM signs 12 year O&M contract for Monterrey lll Power Plant, Mexico

ALSTOM has been awarded a 12-year operation support and maintenance contract for the 1000 MW Monterrey III gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in Mexico. The contract was placed by Iberdrola Energia Monterrey S.A. de C.V., a special purpose company established by Iberdrola - one of Spain’s two largest electrical utilities. 

The contract covers operation support and all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of the plant’s four power trains, including gas and steam turbines, generators and control systems. 

The awarding of this contract reflects the owner’s confidence that O&M support from ALSTOM as Original Equipment Manufacturer will best secure safe operation, reliable service and high availability. It is ALSTOM’s second O&M contract for a GT24-based combined cycle power plant in Mexico, a contract for the Hermosillo plant having been signed in March 2002. 

Monterrey III is the largest combined-cycle power plant in Mexico using ALSTOM’s advanced GT24 gas turbine technology. The plant, which is located close to Mexico’s third largest city, Monterrey, comprises four 250 MW combined cycle blocks in single shaft configuration. Each block includes a GT24 gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator, steam turbine, and generator. 

ALSTOM was responsible for the bulk of the engineering, procurement and construction work after winning the order to build Monterrey III in 2000. Three GT24 combined-cycle blocks were erected and commissioned in a record time of fifteen months from foundation to mechanical completion and the commissioning phase took only seven months. This was a significant accomplishment, setting the project ahead of schedule. The plant was officially inaugurated in August 2002 by the Mexican president, Vicente Fox. Commercial operation of the fourth block is expected in the first quarter of this year. 

This will bring the number of GT24 combined cycle power trains in Mexico to nine, with a combined power output of approximately 2250 MW.
