DB Regionalbahn Westfalen, a regional rail-transport operator
in the Deutsche Bahn group, has placed an order with ALSTOM for
the construction of 28 CORADIA LINT trains and the refurbishment
of 19 CORADIA LINT trains. The value of the order exceeds
€60 million.

The operator plans to improve service on the Sauerland and
Drei-Länder-Eck networks from December 2004, and the new
trains and refurbished units, which will be upgraded technically
and in terms of comfort, will be used on these lines.

The new trains will be built by the ALSTOM plant in
Salzgitter, Germany, and the refurbishment will be carried out in
a plant belonging to the transport operator.

The managing director of DB Regionalbahn Westfalen, Dr.
Burghard Lehmann, said that ALSTOM offered "
overall the best value for money, allowing us to use vehicle
capacities in the most economical way while being able to
implement a number of special features
."

In order to offer optimum comfort for passengers, the 28 new
two-car CORADIA LINT diesel multiple units are equipped with
features such as movable steps for easier access, air
conditioning, passenger information systems, arm rests, a number
of tables and video surveillance.

The trains' spacious multipurpose areas – in which, for
example, a large number of bicycles may be stowed – are
useful for tourist traffic, especially important in the Sauerland
and Siegerland regions.

Twenty-one of the new trains will operate as 648.1 series in
the Sauerland network on the Dortmund-Lüdenscheid,
Dortmund-Iserlohn, Dortmund-Winterberg and Unna-Neuenrade lines.
A detail significant for this ski area: in winter, ski racks can
be fitted instead of luggage racks.

The other seven new trains will operate as 648.2 series on
lines in the Drei-Länder-Eck around Siegen, running between
Hesse, North-Rhine Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate on the
Finnentrop-Olpe, Siegen-Bad Berleburg, Siegen-Dillenburg, and
Siegen-Au an der Sieg lines.

The 19 single-car CORADIA LINT trains that are to be
refurbished (VT 640 series) have been serving these lines since
October 2000. Their level of comfort and equipment will be
brought up to the high-quality standard of the new vehicles.

Including this order, ALSTOM in Salzgitter has sold more than
200 CORADIA LINT trains to 10 transport authorities and operators
in Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark.

"CORADIA LINT is one of our success stories," said Dr.
Dieter Klumpp, managing director of ALSTOM's facilities in
Salzgitter.
"100 of these trains are already providing a successful
passenger service, helping to attract more happy passengers to
rail transport every day."

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in over 60
countries, ALSTOM's Transport Sector offers cutting-edge
products and services to four distinct types of customers:
urban transit authorities and operators; intercity passenger
rail operators and rolling stock owners; rail freight
operators; and intercity railway infrastructure owners.
ALSTOM's Transport Sector, with €4.4 billion in sales in
2001, is among the world's leading suppliers to the railway
industry.
