ALSTOM wins second Kosovan power plant contract

An ALSTOM-led consortium has won a 38m euro contract to refurbish both units of the fire-damaged Kosovo B power plant for Kosovan utility Korporata Energjetike e Kosoves (KEK). The contract, co-funded by the the European Agency for Reconstruction and UNMIK*, follows on from the successful completion of emergency repairs at the plant in Obilic, near Pristina, and the restarting of Unit 2. 

The contract covers the complete refurbishment of the electrical and control equipment and the restarting of Unit 1, which suffered fire damage to its electrical systems following a thunderstorm in July 2002. 

When this is complete, Unit 2, repaired temporarily by ALSTOM and Innogy plc at the end of last year, will be shut down and the electrical and control equipment will be refurbished. Both Units are due to be up and running again before the start of winter, 2003. 

ALSTOM's Power and Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Sectors are in consortium with the German firm KOCH GmbH, which is responsible mainly for civil works. ALSTOM's Power Sector will supply, install and commission the P320 digital control system in each unit and upgrade the instrumentation and control systems of the boiler and steam turbine. The T&D Sector will provide a complete electrical system including medium-voltage and low-voltage switchgear along with MiCOM protection relays. 

ALSTOM was the original builder of the 2 x 339MW lignite-fired power station and has been involved in reconstruction work at the plant since the end of the Kosovan war in June 1999. 

Alain Féraud, tendering manager with ALSTOM's Power Plant Services Business, said: "The time schedule for carrying out the project is very tight and the refurbishment work is a specialised job. Our consortium has the necessary experience and the proven ability to get the job done, on time and to the satisfaction of the customer."
