SMTC, the areas transport authority, is expanding the
tram network with a third line.

Grenoble's transport authority, SMTC, has placed a
90m contract with ALSTOM for the supply of 35 Citadis
tramsets. These trams are for a third line in Grenoble, south
east France.

The third line will run from the train station in
Gières, east of Grenoble, to Seyssins on the west, serving
five municipalities and Grenoble's university area. It is
anticipated that 38000 passengers per day will travel on this
new line. The new 40-meter Citadis trams will each have a
capacity of 274 passengers.

ALSTOM will build the new trams at its facilities in
Aytré, near La Rochelle, France. Delivery is expected to
begin early in 2005, with commercial service to start in
2006.

Michel Moreau, President of ALSTOM's Transport Sector, said
: 'Im very pleased that the greater metropolitan area of
Grenoble and the SMTC have again shown their trust in ALSTOM by
reinforcing a relationship that began in 1986, date of the
first ALSTOM tram contract with SMTC. Grenoble was then the
first customer to order the new 'Tram Français Standard',
the Standard French Tram, which was the first in the world to
offer low entry access. These 53 ALSTOM trams have been in
service on the Grenoble network since 1987.'

The Citadis tram family offers modular, flexible solutions
for fast-growing cities and is designed to meet passenger
expectations in terms of aesthetics, comfort and easy
accessibility. A high level of modularity was one of the
guiding principles in the conception of Citadis, which enables
operators to adapt Citadis to their needs as well as to the
particular image of their city.

Cities such as Paris, Barcelona, Rotterdam, Dublin and
Melbourne have chosen Citadis, and the number of these trams
sold around the world is over 420.
