ALSTOM has won an order valued at
approximately €13 million to upgrade two GT10A turbine
units at the Ubungo Power Station in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania,
owned by Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO).
The modernisation of the station, which will be taken over
for commercial operation by Songas Limited, is part of the
250 MUSD Songo Songo Gas Development and Power Generation
Project. Songas is a private Tanzanian company, with the AES
Corporation as lead investor and debt financing provided by
the World Bank and the European Investment Bank.

Songo Songo Island to the south of
Tanzania has proven to have natural gas reserves, which will
now be exploited for power generation. The gas will be
processed on the Island and transported to the mainland via a
sub-sea pipeline, thence to be transported in an underground
pipeline over 200 kilometers to the Ubungo Power Plant.
ALSTOM's part in the project is to modernise the 2 x GT10A
turbine generator units which were installed in 1994, by
supplying a new GT10B2 gas generator, power turbine and
control system for each unit, incorporating fuel conversion
from oil to gas to accommodate the new local gas supply. The
modernisation will have the additional benefit of yielding
extra power output. This full package delivery also covers
all local labour, transport and other arrangements.

The new machines will be delivered
from ALSTOM's industrial gas turbine facility in Finspong,
Sweden, in June and August this summer. The plant is due for
commissioning in March/April 2004.

Lars Josefsson, ALSTOM's Country
President in Sweden, comments: "We are delighted that Songas
have entrusted us with this order: originally intended as a
simple overhaul, the order will enable us to deliver advanced
new componentry, within a complete solutions package. The
ALSTOM fleet of industrial gas turbines throughout the
continent of Africa is expanding rapidly, and with it the
potential for maintenance, service and modernisation which is
best carried out by the Original Equipment
Manufacturer".
