Companhia do Metropolitano de São Paulo (CMSP), the
company charged with the operation and expansion of the São
Paulo area’s metro, has awarded a turnkey contract for the
first phase of construction of a new line to the Via Amarela
consortium. The group is led by CBPO Engenharia of the Odebrecht
group, which, along with other construction companies, is
responsible for the civil works.
As the member of the consortium responsible for the electrical
and mechanical infrastructure, ALSTOM will design, supply,
install and test the power-supply and electrical-distribution
systems, telecommunications equipment and auxiliary systems (such
as fire detection, pumping and lighting). ALSTOM’s share of
the contract is €80 million.
Called the Amarela (Portuguese for “yellow”) Line,
Line
4 will be 12.8 kilometers long with 11 stations. Expected to
carry a million passengers a day, it will offer connections with
three subway lines and two suburban lines. Commercial operation
is slated to begin in 2007.
“This vote of confidence of ALSTOM’s metro-systems
technology and know-how is also a confirmation of our successful
long-term relationship with São Paulo,” said Francis
Jelensperger, ALSTOM Transport’s senior vice president for
the Americas region.
Over the last three decades, ALSTOM has sold more than 600
metro cars to São Paulo. In a recent project, ALSTOM was the
technical leader of the consortium that built the city’s
Line
5, which opened last year. ALSTOM also supplied the
operations-control center, the auxiliary systems and the fleet of
eight six-car METROPOLIS trainsets for the line.
