The board of directors of the SNCF, the French national
railway company, has notified ALSTOM of an order worth 188
million euros for 30 power cars that will equip 15 existing TGV
trainsets.

The power cars will be integrated into renovated TGV
Réseau trainsets and run on the new TGV Est Européen
network, offering very-high-speed service from Paris and the
northeast of France to southwestern Germany, Luxembourg and
Switzerland. The service will offer travel from Paris via
Strasbourg to Munich and Zurich.

The current order is part of a master agreement under which
the SNCF may exercise options to order up to 31 additional
power cars to complement the fleet, which would bring the total
number of power cars to 61.

Said Michel Moreau, president of ALSTOM’s Transport
Sector:
“We’re very happy that the SNCF has confirmed
its confidence in ALSTOM with this new order. It reinforces our
position as a leader in the market for very-high-speed rail,
notably for the interoperable European network.”

Thanks to the new power cars, the renovated trains will be
interoperable, able to run on the various power-supply and
signaling systems found in the countries in the TGV Est
Européen network:

  • The new power cars will be equipped with triple-voltage
traction units. For these trains, ALSTOM will install a new
asynchronous traction system using IGBT (Insulated-Gate
    Bipolar Transistor) technology.
  • They will also be equipped with the signaling systems
used in France, Germany and Switzerland as well as ERTMS, the
new European Rail Traffic Management System.

The trains will run at 320 kmh in France and at 300 kmh in
Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.

A pre-production trainset will be assembled to carry out
performance and certification tests for French railways (RFF)
as well as those of Germany (DB), Switzerland (CFF) and
Luxembourg (CFL). The testing will be carried out over a period
longer than one year.

Delivery of the trainsets will begin in October 2006 with
commercial service currently set to begin in mid-2007.
Completion of delivery is scheduled for the end of the year
2007.

ALSTOM sites in Aytré-La Rochelle, Belfort, Le Creusot,
Ornans, Tarbes and Villeurbanne will contribute to fulfillment
of the order.
