In December 2002 an ALSTOM-led consortium was awarded a 15 million contract for rehabilitation of two hydro-electric power plants, Orfeus (4 x 40 MW) and Krichim (2 x 40 MW) by Bulgarian Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania EAD (NEK). Both plants are located in the vicinity of Plovdiv and belong to the Rhodope group.

The consortium, consisting of ALSTOM and Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, is responsible for engineering, delivery, project management and development of software as well as supervision of erection and commissioning. ALSTOMs scope of supply includes turbine runners, hydraulic equipment, governor, process control system, medium and low voltage switchgear, static excitation and electrical protection.

ALSTOMs hydro division in Austria is leading the project and has co-ordinated the overall financing. The equipment will be manufactured in the ALSTOM facilities in Austria and France.

Orfeus and Krichim were originally built more than 30 years ago. The rehabilitation, which is due to be completed in 36 months, will increase efficiency, output and availability.

ALSTOM has a strong standing in Bulgaria, having already rehabilitated 21 hydro units in the last ten years for hydro plants including Peshtera, Momina Klisura, Sestrimo, Belmeken, Batak and Aleko.
