In December 2002, ALSTOM's industrial steam turbine unit in Brno, Czech Republic, handed over a 85 MW steam turbine generator (STG) in Kuusankoski, Finland for commercial operation to the customer, Pohjolan Voima Oy. This was the biggest steam turbine ever produced in the unit. It was also the second steam turbine supplied by the Brno unit to Pohjolan Voima Oy since UPM-Kymmenes decision to invest in power generating equipment for paper mills in Finland. The other was Jamsänkoski (46 MW STG).

The STG was synchronised with the national grid in June 2002 in accordance with customer schedule. The commissioning tests were completed to customer satisfaction more than a month before the contractual date, and the turbine and generator have been in operation ever since.

As well as generating electricity at maximum capacity, steam is generated at a capacity of 125 MWthfor the needs of the paper mill in Kuusankoski. The turbine is equipped with an internally controlled extraction connected to the 5 bar steam network of the paper mill and an externally controlled extraction connected to its 15 bar network; steam can be supplied simultaneously to both networks depending on the customers needs. Steam is also extracted for the heating of feed water, for two high-pressure preheaters, three low-pressure preheaters and a deaerator. The turbine also generates district heat at a capacity of 55 MWth, for supply to the Kouvola district heating networks.

The steam turbine is of dual casing design for back pressure/district heating application. It has internally controlled extraction and four bleeds, and is directly coupled to a 2-pole generator. Maximum power output is 85 MW at the speed 3000 rpm, inlet steam 114 bar / 541 °C, internally controlled steam extraction of maximum flow 45t/h at 5 bar, back pressure in the range of 0.3 0.9 bar.

Mr. Seppo Vireä, the Kymin Voima Project Director, says: "The turbine has operated smoothly and has fully met our expectations.

Designed and built in ALSTOMs facility in Brno, Czech Republic, the steam turbine was commissioned in close collaboration with ALSTOMs Customer Service Segment in Finland. In addition to the steam turbine, ALSTOMs Environmental Control Systems Business supplied a flue gas cleaning system for the biofuel boilers of Jämsankoski and Kuusankoski plants. ALSTOM FlowSystems delivered a 5.4 km pre-insulated district heating transmission line extending from Kymin Voima/Kuusankoski to the centre of Kouvola.
